CANTON — A Peru man was killed early Monday morning when his car left Route 108, crossed two driveways and struck several objects, according to an Oxford County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Jared Bernard, 22, was driving east in his 2007 Cadillac sedan about 5:20 a.m. when the car went off the highway, Deputy Chief James Urquhart said. The initial findings at the scene indicated the car hit a driveway, went airborne, hit the ground “before grazing a telephone pole, hit another driveway, hit a large tree 10 feet off the ground before coming to a rest on the driver’s side …”

Bernard had no passengers and died at the scene, Urquhart said.

The highway was closed for several hours.

Canton and Peru fire departments and Med-Care Ambulance service responded to the crash, which is under investigation.
