PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Lawyers for a Maine man serving a life sentence in the 1988 murder of a 12-year-old Bowdoin girl say information from two pathologists could help their client get a new trial.

The Portland Press Herald says Dr. Cyril Wecht and Dr. Walter Hofman reviewed the case of Dennis Dechaine at the request of Dechaine’s lawyers.

The lawyers say that Wecht and Hofman agreed that Sarah Cherry likely died several hours after Dechaine emerged from the woods and was taken into police custody.

The 52-year-old Dechaine is serving a life sentence.

William Stokes of the Maine Attorney General’s office says that even if Sarah’s time of death was later than estimated it would not by itself exclude Dechaine as her killer.
