WATERFORD — Wyatt Andrews of Bisbeetown Road has announced his intent to seek the open selectman’s seat as a write-in candidate.
“My feeling is it’s important to fill the post,” the 50-year-old said.
No one took out nomination papers by the deadline.
In January, Board of Selectmen Chairman John Bell announced his decision not to seek re-election to a second term due to time constraints. He said he felt strongly the town would be best served by a person who could devote more time to the job.
Selectmen Randy Lessard and Richard Hunt also serve on the board.
Andrews said he has been thinking about becoming involved more with the community that he was raised in and when the opportunity came to run for office he decided to give it a go.
“I’ve never done anything like this,” said Andrews, who talked to various people including his cousin and former Selectmen Norman Rust and Bell before making his decision.
Andrews said it was not an easy decision to make after reading about the vacancy in the paper.
“Why hasn’t someone stepped up and wanted to help?” he said he asked himself. “At first I said why step into the frying pan. But I think it is what it is.”
Andrews said he has no immediate plans if elected, other than to listen and learn from his fellow selectmen and residents, and try to do what’s best for the town.
Andrews, who has three grown children, moved from Waterford to Florida about 20 years ago and moved back to work for local manufactured housing companies.
Now laid off from KBS Building Systems in Paris, Andrews says he has enough time to devote to the board that his father, William, also served on in the 1960s.
“You take the good with the bad. You try to balance out what is best for your town. It’s OK to agree to disagree,” he said of what he hopes will be his future work as a selectman.
Polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 5, at the municipal building on Valley Road.
Voters will have one name on the annual town election ballot: incumbent school director William Hanger.
