Stanley J. Sotman

1915 – 2010

RUMFORD — Stanley Joseph Sotman, 94, of Rumford, died peacefully on March 2, at home with his loving family at his side.

He was born in Rumford, June 24, 1915, to the late John and Julia Kauneckaite Sotman.

He graduated from Stephens High School, Class of 1933. During high school, Stan was on the track team and was captain of the 1932 to 1933 basketball team.

On Nov. 16, 1936, he married the former Jean Mary Loisel of Rumford, and together they raised three children.

His first job was with Wiseman Farm Ice Cream as a deliveryman when he was 17 years old. He was employed with the Oxford Paper Co. from 1933 to 1944, and Von Oil Co. from 1944 to 1951. After that, he realized his dream of owning his own business when he started Sotman’s Chevron on Congress Street in Rumford, which he operated from 1951 until he retired in 1978.

He was a communicant of St. Athanasius-St. John Catholic Church, and he was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus, and the Rumford Elks Club. He enjoyed bowling, playing bridge, fishing, hunting and spending time with the family at his camp at Roxbury Pond.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Jean; his son, John and wife, Carol, of Norway; two daughters, Janice MacDonald of Shirley, Mass., and Ann Desalle of Rumford; one sister, Helen Vaughn of Fallston, Md., seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents.
