Stella Palman Couture

1909 – 2010

LEWISTON — Stella Palman Couture, 100, formerly of 28 Jean St., Lewiston, died March 7, in Lewiston.

She was born in Paterson, N.J., May 16, 1909, the eldest child of Thomas and Apolonia Popowich Palman. She moved to Lewiston in 1911. She attended Jordan Grammar School.

She retired from W.S. Libbey Co. in Lewiston after 52 years of employment. After her retirement, she worked part-time at Elizabeth Ann convenience store.

In 1946, she married Wilfred “Pete” Couture of Auburn. He died in 1967. For many years, she lived in the family homestead on Sabattus Street, where, well into her 80s, she tended an enormous garden. She loved nature and animals and would frequently be found outside in her yard.

She was a wonderful cook, especially when it came to Polish food. She was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Church in Lewiston and a former member of the St. Anne Sodality. She was a loyal sister, friend, and a loving and attentive aunt to her many nieces and nephews.

She is survived by two brothers, William and Raymond Palman, both of Lewiston.

She was predeceased by her brothers, John, Thomas and Paul Palman; and her sisters, Mary Metallo, Frances Barrows and Josephine Handy.
