PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Two men with criminal records are facing federal charges they tried to buy handguns in Maine so they could be resold illegally without serial numbers in Massachusetts.

On March 4, federal agents arrested 27-year-old Joseph Burns of Lynn, Mass., and 24-year-old Marvin Davis of Boston during a sting operation in Wells.

Court documents say another man told agents that he had sold about 100 handguns to Burns since September.

The Portland Press Herald says agents had information that Burns had bought about 100 handguns since September or early October.

Prosecutors say the men were prohibited from possessing firearms because of prior convictions.

Burns was released on bail and Davis is being held.
