PORTLAND — Calling it “a day of atonement for past offenses,” Bishop Richard Malone has set aside a Mass on March 16 to pray for those harmed by clergy sexual abuse, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland announced Saturday.
On Tuesday, Malone will celebrate Mass at 12:15 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland.
“Through prayer and reflection, may we become even more committed to healing the wounds of the past and preventing harm in the future,” Malone said in a prepared statement.
In addition, the Diocese of Portland will participate in Child Abuse Awareness Month in April by circulating information on the topic, “sending all Maine parishes a special prayer card for survivors to be used during Masses throughout the month (and) by sending a special liturgy to be used on the weekend of April 17-18.”
“The work of protecting children in our diocese is not a short-term project, but a commitment and responsibility now woven into the fabric of church life,” Malone said.
