NORWAY — People in the Oxford Hills area are invited to join the Rev. Gyoway Kato and fellow monks and nuns of the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist order in a “peace walk for a nuclear free future” on Wednesday, March 24, when the group walks from Bethel to Norway. The group will leave at 8:30 a.m. from Davis Park in Bethel, next to the Androscoggin River.

The group will join local peace activists that evening at the Unitarian Universalist Church. They are inviting area people to walk with them and/or join them there at 6 p.m. for a potluck supper. Discussion will follow about getting rid of nuclear weapons and converting from a war to a peace economy. There will be music and chanting.

The walkers will stay at the church that night, and at local homes, before heading out in the morning to Lewiston, the next stage in their journey on foot to New York City. People may join them at any point on their way.

Starting out from Vermont and passing through New Hampshire, the group of 15 or so walkers will pass through Bethel, Norway, Lewiston, Bath, Brunswick, Freeport, Portland, Saco and Kennebunk before leaving Maine.

Their arrival in New York on May 2 is timed with rallies and demonstrations there in preparation for a United Nations Review Conference on nuclear nonproliferation. Bruce Gagnon, responsible for organizing hospitality for the walkers in Maine, said three other peace walks will be making their way to New York City from different parts of the United States.
