LEWISTON — The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society recently received a $2,000 grant to help with the medical costs of treating two pets brought to the animal shelter.

Chauncey, a toy fox terrier, and Stanley, a tiger cat, were each in need of urgent medical care upon their arrival. Stanley had lost his paw in an unknown accident and Chauncey, who had not received appropriate after-care following numerous unsuccessful surgeries to repair a broken leg, were each given a second chance and a hopeful future thanks to the grant.

The American Humane Association realizes that the medical costs of treating and rehabilitating a mistreated animal can easily become overwhelming for any animal welfare organization, particularly when long-term care is necessary. Through the Second Chance Fund, they are able to support member organizations, such as the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society, in their work.

By providing financial assistance, in select cases, to animal welfare organizations responsible for the temporary care of animals as they are prepared for adoption into permanent homes, the program provides animal victims of abuse or neglect with a second chance at life.

The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society, 55 Strawberry Ave., provides a safe haven for more than 5,500 sick, homeless and abused animals in the greater Androscoggin area each per year. The primary support for the shelter comes from fundraising events and donations of citizens.
