LEWISTON — Volunteers from Pepsi Bottling are scheduled to help fix up city parks, paint a new mural in Veterans Park and install new playground equipment at Sunnyside Park in May.
Lewiston is one of four Maine communities picked to benefit from Pepsi Bottling’s “Pepsi Supports Surrounding Towns” effort. The company plans to bring volunteers to help clean up 16 New England towns in May as a part of that effort.
Lewiston Community Relations Coordinator Dot Perham-Whittier said the company sent out requests for proposals in February. Lewiston’s staff submitted four proposals to the company.
“And much to our surprise, they picked all four,” Perham-Whittier said.
The first projects will bring Pepsi volunteers to clean up all seven city parks, nearly 18 acres of green space across the city.
For the second project, volunteers will update a mural near the bandstand area at Veterans Park, just off of Main Street and below the Great Falls. Volunteers will install new city-purchased playground equipment as part of the third project and clean up a flower bed in George Ricker Park for the fourth. That’s the green space at the corner of East Avenue and Bartlett Street.
The company has also agreed to provide picnic food and beverages for community cleanup days in Buckfield and Brownfield. In Buckfield, the company will host a cookout at the Cross Road Little League ball fields. In Brownfield, they’ll provide food for volunteers cleaning and repairing the Memorial Park playground.
All of the cleanup events are tentatively scheduled for May 8, although the company may decide to spread out the four Lewiston projects. Lewiston Public Works District foreman Mike Bernier said he planned to tour the work sites with company officials next week.
“We may have to wait to do the playground at Sunnyside Park until we actually have the equipment, and they may want to hire an artist to help design the Veterans Park mural,” Bernier said. “They’ve agreed to do a lot of work in Lewiston and it might take a bit more planning then they first thought.”
