100 years ago, 1910

At 1:30 o’clock this morning Eleanor, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Haskell of 54 Ash street died from scarlet fever. Mr. and Mrs Haskell are heartbroken, this being the third child to die within a month. The first was their five-year-old son who died from scarlet fever. Then a daughter who had been left weak from the same disease contracted pneumonia and died and now still another has passed away. There are two other children, aged seven and seven months. Both of these children are well.

50 years ago, 1960

That live alligator which a Lewiston youth received in the mail Saturday is now just another specimen.

Richard Verville, a sophomore at St. Dominic High School, ordered an alligator from South Carolina. He expected it would be shipped dead, but it arrived very much alive.

The four-foot gator was put out in the cold and, as expected, a Maine winter was more than it could take.

25 years ago, 1985

Robert Drewal will provide the program when the Androscoggin Valley Art Association meets at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Auburn Police Station conference room. Drewal teaches art at Lewiston high School and will demonstrate using charcoal with a live model. The public is invited, and refreshments will be served.
