Between 15 and 20 people were forced out into the cold scantily clothed this morning by a fire in the tenement house at 70, 72 and 74 Canal street. One old woman narrowly escaped with her life and another jumped through a window in her excitement. The damage will not be large, it is thought. The cause is unknown.

50 years ago, 1960

Twenty-four applicants for posts on the Lewiston police force took a written examination last night, and 11 of the candidates were successful.

The Lewiston Police Commission administered the general intelligence test and later scored the exams. The 11 successful candidates will take a physical exam next and those passing the physical will have an oral interview with the commission.

25 years ago, 1985

Thanks to increased state subsidies, the Lewiston City Council appears ready to accept a proposed $13.5 million school budget that doesn’t increase local taxes even though it is 14.5 percent higher than this year.

Beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, the City Council will review the 1985-86 school budget that Superintendent Robert V. Connors said will actually lower property taxes.

Connors said a new state funding formula will enable the council to increase the original 1985-86 school budget proposal by almost $608,000 without increasing taxes.
