100 years ago, 1910

Auburn’s new post office, one of the finest for its size in New England, will be open for business. The entire building will be open to citizens today from 2 o’clock in the afternoon until 9 this evening. Employees of the department will be at the building to escort the visitors about, and to explain how Uncle Sam handles the mail. 

50 years ago, 1960

Hundreds of Lewiston youngsters and adults took advantage of the pleasant holiday weather yesterday to get in some skating.

The Police Athletic League reported good-sized crowds filled its Martel School, Summer Street and Rideout Street rinks. Most of the skaters were children, the PAL noted, but there were many adults counted as well. At the Martel rink alone, the crowd was estimated to number approximately 400 skaters.

25 years ago, 1985

At  Gov. Brennan’s request, two Lewiston-Auburn residents are serving on a committee that is assessing the training and employment needs of handicapped people who are beyond school age.

Frances Fink of Auburn and Kelsey Orestis of Lewiston have been appointed to serve on the committee, which was created by a bill passed by the Legislature during September’s special session on education.

The committee is charged with documenting the availability of training and education for handicapped young adults who are beyond school age, evaluating the ability of existing programs to meet their needs and identifying new approaches that address their needs.
