Young women who have been pretty well-known characters along the streets are leaving town. A number of them have already left and more are said to be thinking of finding some other city in which to take up residence. “Moving Day” is said to have come about through police activity, it being understood that gentle, but nevertheless firm suggestions have been made to many of the class considered by many as “undesirables” that their presence was no longer wished. A number of the young women purchased tickets for Boston, it is said.

50 years ago, 1960

More than 800 persons attended the opening of the Modern Living Show last night at Lewiston’s Memorial Armory where numerous booths displayed the latest in modern living.

One of the more unique displays inside the armory is that of the Civil Defense unit. A concrete bomb shelter has been set up to show the type of shelter that may be constructed in the basement of any home and still offer the maximum protection.

25 years ago, 1985

Two benefit performances Sunday will pay tribute to Maurice Fournier, the man often called “the father of the Maine modern music scene,” according to Ed Boucher, owner of E.A.B. Recording Studio.

Boucher said the Kamalot Inn of Lisbon will host the two shows to raise money to help Fournier, who ran Maurice Music Mart on Lisbon Street in Lewiston for many years. The shows will be “as much a chance for local musicians to show their appreciation for Maurice” as they are to raise money for Fournier, who recently underwent major heart surgery.
