Ben Nugent, wildlife biologist and board member at Poland Spring Academy, recently taught a program to PSA students on winter wilderness survival skills. The school’s campus includes 140 acres of mostly undeveloped land, ideal for a wilderness training setting. Students learned how to track animals in the snow, make drinkable water, find directions, construct shelter, start a fire and cook. Students are pictured after successfully starting a fire using sparks from a firesteel. Poland Spring Academy is a private, small, nonprofit school for students in kindergarten through grade 12.
