Saturday was the first of a two-day canoe trip sponsored by the Royal River Conservation Trust aiming to get from Sabbathday Lake to the sea in Casco Bay at Yarmouth, a distance of roughly 25 miles. The river meanders from Sabbathday Lake Outlet through New Gloucester, Auburn, back to New Gloucester, to Gray, North Yarmouth, Yarmouth to Casco Bay. Twelve canoes participated in the event.

Canoes had to be portaged from the dam at the Bald Hill Road at the Royal River dam in along the Ethel Sawyer Road to bring paddlers back on the river as they traveled along the Royal River to Casco Bay.
