DEAR SUN SPOTS: Could you please find out what the parking ordinances are for the city of Lewiston for all four seasons? There are so many signs on one street, and yet there are none on others, and you still get ticketed on streets that are not posted. Thank you. — Gordon Libby, Lewiston

ANSWER: Whenever you get a ticket, you should review it to see which offense box is checked. That should tell you what you’ve done wrong and help you avoid future tickets.

Sun Spots spoke to Lt. Mark Cornelio of the Lewiston Police Department, who said you probably ran afoul of the wintertime overnight parking bans. From Dec. 1 to March 31, overnight parking is prohibited on most city streets (there are a few exceptions) from 12:01 a.m. to 6 a.m.

There are also summer (March 31 to Dec. 1) overnight parking bans for many city streets. For a list, see the LPD’s Web site, www.lewistonpd.org (look under Public Info). Another thing to watch for are overnight parking bans for street sweeping.

Lt. Cornelio recommends that when people move to a new neighborhood that they investigate the parking regulations for the surrounding streets. He said it’s impossible for the city to sign every street, and even when they do put up signs, they are often stolen.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have an old handmade wool rug. I believe it is called “punched” because it is made of tiny strips of wool. It needs repair. There are several small tears and the lining under the border has come loose. I think there are a lot of good years left to this rug if it is properly repaired. Does anyone do this type of repair? ANSWER: Sun Spots found several angel fountains online, but nothing popped up locally. Have you visited the local garden centers? The larger ones often sell statuary. Perhaps readers will have additional ideas or one they’d like to sell.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am a fourth-grade teacher at Geiger Elementary School in Lewiston. I use a guitar as a teaching tool and have had many requests from students to teach them how to play. I spend time during recess, lunch and after school and provide free lessons to teach kids basic chords and songs, but I’m limited to only teaching those who have instruments at home in order for them to be able to practice. I’m hoping that there may be some readers who have guitars that are no longer used or might be in need of repairs that I could loan to students who are longing to be musicians.
