NEW VINEYARD — Herman H. Mitchell, 91, of New Vineyard, passed away peacefully May 4, at his home.
He was born on Nov. 18, 1918, in Zittau, Germany, the son of Karl and Margarete (Cottin) Michel. He completed his education in Germany and Holland, before emigrating to America in October 1937.
He worked for Radio Engineering Lab in Long Island City, N.Y., and taught briefly at NYA, a vocational school. He also worked as a machinist at Precision Engineering in New York and Kenyon Instruments in Huntington, N.Y., before starting his own business, Mitchell Scale Models, making industrial scale models for Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton Corp. as well as the U.S. government. Later on Mitchell Scale Models developed high quality patterns and parts for model railroading enthusiasts.
He is survived by his children, H. Charles Mitchell and wife, Carolyn, of Milwaukee, Wisc., Sandra Dubay and her husband, Kenneth, of New Vineyard and Marsha Mitchell of Farmington; a sister, Jutta Van Allen of Hicksville, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Sally Asfar Mitchell in 1943; and his second wife, Sapphire Hawxhurst Mitchell in 1997.
