Lewiston Kennel Shop pet groomer Jessica Poulin, left, collects pet hair as Tara Tufts grooms a mini schnauzer on Wednesday. The Kennel Shop Manager Dennis Trimpop said all of the company’s Maine stores are collecting hair and fur to help clean up the oil in the Gulf of Mexico, where an oil rig exploded on April 20. Misty Edwards, a 34-year-old Lewiston woman and licensed cosmetologist launched the hair-raising effort last week. She has rounded up hair from local salons and received donations of other kinds from a variety of different businesses, including 50 buckets with lids from Shaw’s. On Friday, Edwards and others from The Kennel Shop will set up tables between noon and 4 p.m. Edwards does her work through the national group Matter of Trust. She’s hoping that local salons, pet groomers and related businesses will get connected with that group on their own and keep donating hair.
