Benjamin Franklin did not discover electricity, as suggested in an “Inventions Mysteries” story Monday. He published a paper proposing a kite experiment in 1750, which was 90 years after electrical current was first mechanically produced by Otto von Guericke in 1660. There is some doubt Franklin’s experiment was performed as now described, which is extremely dangerous and should not be repeated by anyone.
