RANGELEY — New England Celtic Arts will present celebrated Celtic duo Buddy MacDonald and Rachel Davis at three concert venues in early June.
MacDonald, whose career as a singer-songwriter and entertainer began 30 years ago, and Davis, an award-winning 21-year-old fiddler, will perform Tuesday, June 8, at Lakeside Theater; Wednesday, June 9, at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in Carthage; and Thursday, June 10, at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts.
Born and brought up on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, MacDonald was exposed at an early age to the singing and storytelling of some of the great Celtic singers, and much of his songwriting is still influenced by this style.
Over the years, he entertained audiences throughout Canada, the United States, Germany, Scotland and the Scandinavian countries, performing as a solo act and in different combinations with other musicians from Cape Breton. He has shared the stage with Natalie MacMaster, Howie MacDonald, Ashley MacIssac, Dave MacIssac and John Allan Cameron.
Since Celtic Colours International Festival began 13 years ago, MacDonald has been host of the late night Festival Club, and has performed with numerous Celtic artists.
MacDonald’s songs, along with his own recordings, have been performed and recorded by such artists as Cameron, McGinty and Dave Gunning.
Davis, who hails from Big Baddeck, Cape Breton, has listened to the Cape Breton style of music all her life. Inspired by her grandfather, Clarence Long, also a fiddler, she began taking lessons from him at age 12. For the past six years, she has performed with MacDonald on stage at festivals and Cape Breton events. Her self-titled CD has won acclaim throughout Atlantic Canada, and she has been a featured performer at the Maine Highland Games in Topsham and the American Folk Festival in Bangor.
MacDonald and Davis will be featured performers at the Festival of Small Halls on Prince Edward Island in mid-June and the Blas Festival in the Highlands of Scotland in September.
Curtain is at 7 p.m. at Lakeside and Skye, and at 7:30 pm in Unity. There will be a preshow jam session 45 minutes prior to curtain at Skye and Unity.
