DIXFIELD — Selectmen unanimously agreed to make an offer on a piece of Main Street property that, if accepted, could become an entrance for a public boat launch, as well as used for several other purposes.

Town Manager Gene Skibitsky said Monday that the offer on the property last Friday was prompted by a deadline required by the real estate agency handling the building and the 1-plus acre land parcel owned by the Althea W. Fish estate.

He said the Realtor, Ann White of the Auburn firm of Coldwell Banker Millett Realty, will meet with the heirs on Wednesday to discuss the town’s offer, as well as any others that may have come in.

Skibitsky declined to say what the town’s offer is. If accepted, the funds would come from the Ione Harlow Community Fund.

The rear of the long, narrow parcel borders on the Androscoggin River.

Tentative plans call for removing the building, then turning the rear of the lot into a boat launch. Other parts of the lot could become a parking and picnic area, or the site for a memorial. Skibitsky said the town’s comprehensive plan calls for establishing a public boat launch.

Right now, the only public access to the river is a carry-in trail located off the Canton Point Road established by the local paper mill.

The Fish home is believed to be more than 200 years old.

If the town’s offer is accepted, Skibitsky said townspeople would have to approve the purchase at a special town meeting that would be held later in the summer. He said the state has funds available for building a boat launch.

It is not known yet where money to raze the building would come from, however. He said the first step is to acquire the property.

The town should know sometime next week whether its offer has been accepted.
