PHILLIPS — As of late Tuesday night, two towns out of five in SAD 58 had approved the $9.6 million school budget. Voters in Eustis with a vote of 115–46 and Avon by 73–43.

The budget was passed by nearly 100 SAD 58 residents on June 1 but needed validation by voters in Phillips, Strong, Avon, Kingfield and Eustis on Tuesday.

Both Eustis and Avon voters also chose not to continue with the referendum validation process over the next few years. Eustis voted 106–55, and Avon voted 78–37.

An approval vote by SAD 58 residents for the June 1 budget action finalizes the budget, while a negative vote means the school board takes the budget back to the drawing board and starts over.

This year’s budget process, one that included laying off employees, not filling positions and making overall decreases for a tight budget, brought this $9.6 million budget in at $460,000 less the present budget.
