LEWISTON — Area residents are invited to a contra dance put on by the DownEast Friends of the Folk Arts on Friday, June 11, at the Lewiston Public Library.

Noted caller Tony Parkes will lead dances to music provided by Le HotClub du Maine, featuring fiddlers Greg Boardman and Julia Plumb, guitarist Aidan Boardman and percussionist Alfred Lund.

A veteran of several Maine folk music groups over the past 30 years, Boardman is well known in the Twin Cities as director of Lewiston’s public school string music program for grades 4-8. He also serves on the applied music faculty at Bates College, where he was Plumb’s fiddle coach while she was a student there. Aidan Boardman is Greg’s son, home for the summer from Ithaca College, where he is majoring in music. Lund is Greg’s bandmate in the group Bustopher Jones, long popular on Maine’s contra dance circuit.

Parkes, who hails from the Boston area, is one of the most active square and contra dance callers in the business. He started calling in 1964. Since then, he has taught and called contras and New England squares in 34 states, Canada and Europe; helped produce a half-dozen recordings of dance music with and without calls; and served on the boards of several dance organizations. He also wrote “Contra Dance Calling: A Basic Text,” the definitive work on becoming a contra and square dance caller.

The contra dance will run from 8 to 11 p.m. in Callahan Hall.

Admission is $5, $3 for students. Callahan Hall is on the third floor of the library at 200 Lisbon St. For more information, call 782-0386 or 513-3135.
