RUMFORD — Standing on the threshold of future’s doorway on Saturday evening, 124 Mountain Valley High School graduates paused, then belted out Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

A crowd of several hundred people applauded, giving the seniors dressed in blue gowns a standing ovation.

It was the class song.

Forty-five minutes earlier, class president Carl Geoffrey Zurhorst reminded them why they were there, as if they didn’t know.

“All of the students you see seated behind me are remarkable,” Zurhorst said in his graduation speech. “They have walked through the doorways of our elementary, middle and high schools … studied hard, played hard, worked hard. And they’ve done it all to get to this day.”

After thanking parents, teachers, friends and relatives, Zurhorst said he and his classmates had finally reached that door that for so long had stood just out of reach.

“Soon we will all be walking outside into the rest of our lives,” he said.

“We all have the distinct honor of being part of what may be the greatest class Mountain Valley High School has ever produced, in my opinion.

“As a class, we possess a level of talent, intelligence and drive unlike any class in recent memory. I expect and hope this will continue as a legacy to the school, the community and region,” he said.

“We are the Mountain Valley High School Class of 2010 — and we are incredible!”

Valedictorian McKenzie Kaubrys urged her classmates to remain passionate and fearless.

“I have no doubt that every member of our class is capable of achieving extraordinary things,” she said.

“My wish for all of you is that you find what makes you truly happy,” she said. “A fulfilling life cannot be defined in a few words, for it is up to us to discover what we were meant to do.”
