WALES — Town meeting voters approved a municipal budget Saturday that will keep spending about the same as the current fiscal year, but taxes will go down because school costs have decreased, Board of Selectmen Chairman Paul Burgess said.
“We are expecting a reduction in taxes due to the new (regional) school unit that we are in,” Burgess said. “Our assessment is going to be less than what it has been. I don’t know how much the assessment is going to be less, but we’re expecting our mill rate to drop about 2 mills.”
Two mills translates to $2 per $1,000 of property valuation, meaning taxes on a $100,000 home would go down by $200.
All but one of the town money articles passed, Burgess said.
“(It) was to put a fence around the fire pond that was constructed and they voted not to do that,” he said.
Voters also chose to reduce the town’s undesignated fund balance from about $1 million to $600,000.
“So that means we have to turn back about $400,000 to the taxpayers,” Burgess said.
