LEWISTON — The YWCA of Central Maine will host a Canine Companion obedience class as part of their Unleash program. The series will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m Wednesdays, June 30, July 7, 14, 21, 28, Aug. 4 and 11
This is a basic training course using positive reinforcement techniques, facilitated by Teri Robinson. Training should be fun for humans and dogs alike. The class not only covers all the basics such as loose leash walking, coming when called, sit, down, stay and leave it, but also teaches the handler basic training formulas, management techniques and problem solving strategies. Participants will learn how to incorporate exercises into daily life to create a happy and cooperative friendship with their dog. The first class is a human only orientation.
Teri Robinson, CPDT-KA, is a certified pet dog trainer, has studied psychology and animal behavior at USM, is a tester/observer for Therapy Dogs Inc, an AKC CGC/Star Puppy evaluator and a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. A former veterinary technician, Robinson learned about positive reinforcement training.
She started teaching classes in 2003, and found that she enjoys working with people as much as she enjoys working with dogs. She enjoys working with individuals and families to create a better understanding between dog and owner.
Cost to members of the YWCA is $120 and $145 for nonmembers. Preregistration is required. Call customer service at 795-4050 for more information or to register.
