Taxes and death are for sure in the town of Greene. And after taxpayers open their huge tax bill, they might wish they were dead, because it would be cheaper than paying the tax bill.

Two years ago, town officials claimed tax bills would go down. They didn’t. Why? Because the town did a revaluation based on the market in the heyday of real estate. Now, the housing market is in the toilet (except for property valuations, which in some cases doubled).

My tax rate is starting to go back up. At that rate, in four years, Greene tax bills will have increased 100 percent.

I look around town and where people once flocked to town, now their houses are going up for sale at a rapid rate. But let’s not forgot, in just five years, town employees have had their salaries go up by 33 percent in raises and benefits.

In today’s world, people are trying to hold the line, but not in Greene.

In my opinion, the board of selectmen need to redo the revaluation that was erroneous two years ago, and give Greene taxpayers a break instead of taking them to the cleaners. But, as we all understand, that will not happen.
