RUMFORD — NewPage Corp. is in the process of applying for a new permit that would allow millions of gallons of treated water to be discharged into the Androscoggin River.

Spokeswoman Janet Hall said the application will go to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. The current permit expires in September.

The application requests that up to 34 million gallons of treated wastewater, and up to 47 million gallons of non-contact cooling water be discharged into the river each day.

She said the amounts requested for the five-year permit are the standard number.

The application is expected to be filed on or about June 30 and will be available for public review at the DEP Augusta office and the Rumford town office.

If a public hearing or review by the Board of Environmental Protection is requested on the application, notification must be made to the DEP within 30 days of the filed application or 30 days from the date of public notice which was June 23.

In other paper mill matters, Hall said about three dozen summer employees have been hired for the season. She said the mill has continued this practice for the past several years despite the layoffs and downsizing at the mill during the past couple of years.

She said all machines are operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
