NORWAY — The Norway Memorial Library will host a First Friday Art Opening from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 2, featuring works by Murad Sayen of South Paris and Veronica Cross of Portland. The exhibit was coordinated by members of the Norway Arts Festival Committee to hang in conjunction with the 2010 festival. The theme of the exhibit is “Western Maine Landscapes.”

Sayen paints full-time in his home in South Paris. He has always painted realistically, with an emphasis on the quality of light and scenes from daily life. He teaches advanced oil painting under the auspices of Western Maine Art Group.

Cross moved to Maine from Brooklyn, N.Y., in 2006. In her paintings, there is a loose narrative of discovery, loss, displacement and redemption all set within a landscape context, or where the outside world has a key role.

In addition to viewing the exhibit, all are invited to see the mural art created by teens under the direction of Boxberry art teacher Jess Person. Teens brainstormed, designed and painted the mural on the library’s Teen Room walls. Student in grades seven to 12 worked together for a week to paint the mural representing cultural monuments, book characters, symbols, myths, manga and fantasy.

Teens who participated include Eva Gabrielsen, Emma DayBranch, Kelsey Freitas, Ian Allen, Charley-Jean Hilligoss, Sara Campbell, Reed McLean, Emily Cormier, Carly Saura and Catherine Lamb.

The Western Maine Landscapes exhibit will remain on view through July and may be seen any time the library is open. The Norway Memorial Library is located at 255 Main St. For more information, call 743-5309 or visit www.norway.lib.me.us.
