A South Portland man was sent to prison for 45 years Thursday for shooting another man in the eye during a break-in on Shaker Hill Road in Gray in the spring.

Jon Brown, 52, pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the May 23 attack on a man who had once helped raise him.

Police said Brown broke into the Shaker Hill Road home of Harold Small where he tied up the older man, beat him and then shot him in the head with a .22 rifle.

Small survived the shooting. Brown was arrested a day later at a rental cabin along Route 302 in Windham.

The attempted murder charge was upgraded to aggravated attempted murder because Brown was convicted of attempted murder in 1983. He served part of a 20-year prison sentence for it.
