PARIS — The Paris Public Library yearly hosts a summer reading challenge. This year, for every 500 minutes a child reads, or is read to, they will be able to choose and keep a free book, collecting up to a total of three for the summer.

The top five readers for the summer will each receive a $25 gift certificate. If the total read by all participants exceeds 120,000 minutes, everyone will receive a special prize. Last year’s participants read a total of 132,660 minutes.

To participate, a child only needs to pick up a reading log and begin reading, recording the titles of the books they read and how many minutes spent reading. Only the minutes, and not the titles, need to be listed when enjoying picture books. Reading logs for the summer challenge are available at the library’s circulation desk or from any of the library’s staff.

The reading challenge is free and open to all children in the community. For more information, call the Paris Public Library at 743-6994 or e-mail [email protected].

Information may also be found on the library’s new website, www.paris.lib.me.us, which also features blogs for children and for teens.
