FARMINGTON — Rainbow trout kept nibbling at lines cast Friday in Rollo Pond during Farmington Recreation’s second annual Fishing Derby for Adults with Developmental Disabilities. The trout nibbled but were just a bit “finicky and uncooperative” with only four caught during the derby, Recreation Director Steve Shibles said.

Brian Folsom Jr., 22, with some casting help from Shibles, caught the first fish, an 11-ounce, 12-inch trout. Folsom went on to catch a second fish, two out of the four caught.

“I can’t believe I caught the first one,” he said as helpers took the fish from his line.

Two trophies, purchased by Coca Cola of Farmington, which also purchased extra fish for the derby, were given out to the one who caught the first fish and the one who caught the biggest fish.

Amanda Nadeau won the trophy for the biggest fish. Her fish was just a little bigger than Folsom’s, he said.

The pond, located on the campus of the University of Maine at Farmington, was stocked for Saturday’s annual Flagg Family Fishing Derby, a tradition sponsored by the Recreation Department that is normally held on July 4 but is being held on July 3 this year along with Farmington’s parade.

Twenty-five participants from agencies such as Work First and Life Enrichment Advancing People gathered along the shore and to help cast lines in the murky water. LEAP provided rods, reels and worms for those fishing.
