Trevar Haefele already has a big piece of being a well-recognized athlete down: Giving credit where credit is due.

“You can’t be a good player without good players around you,” Haefele said. “You’re a good player because you get help from your teammates. They’re the ones that can help make you shine.”

By that measure, Haefele might have some of the best teammates in the world.

The St. Dom’s senior amassed 107 points — including 60 assists — in his senior campaign for the Saints, who finished the regular season unbeaten and played in the Eastern Class B final this spring against Yarmouth.

To those points he added 192 ground balls, a faceoff percentage better than 75 percent, and an MVP award at the annual Maine senior all-star game as the top player from Class B in the game, a matchup Class B players won, 17-8, over their Class A counterparts.

As proud parents go, Trevar Haefele’s father, Dave, had the ultimate front-row seat: Dave is the Saints’ head coach.

“He has a lot of talent, obviously, but I think what makes him that much better is his overall lacrosse I.Q.,” Dave Haefele said. “He’s been a two-year captain for us, and he’s also helped add cohesiveness to the team through the coaching change.”

Dave took over this season as the team’s head coach.

And instead of those 107 points, the Saints nearly had an offensively-gifted goaltender. As a freshman, Trevar stood between the pipes for the Saints.

“That’s where he started playing in high school,” Dave said. “He played the whole season back there.”

“When I played on a summer team that summer, I had the choice to play out on attack or in goal, and I changed it up and went to play up front. That kind of dictated the rest of my high school career.”

But the stint as a keeper helped Trevar become a better attackman.

“I was able to relate more to how a goalie thinks,” he said. “I understood the defensive breakdown of the game a lot better. I understood how a goalie thinks and is going to react.”

The result? An all-star season, one he had the chance to share not only with his father, but with his brother, Troy, a sophomore with the Saints.

“We’ve been playing together for a long time, even when we were younger he’d play up a level,” Trevar said.

Next season, Trevar will play lacrosse for Nazareth College.

For his accomplishments on the field, for his part in helping to lead the Saints to the Eastern Class B final and for all of his lacrosse accomplishments, Trevar Haefele is the 2010 Sun Journal Boys’ Lacrosse Player of the Year.
