Thieves, who apparently made their getaway on the Androscoggin River in a stolen boat, looted the Higgins Sport Center of $608 in merchandise over the long holiday weekend, Auburn police reported yesterday afternoon.

The boat used in the get-away, two outboard motors, a shotgun and two rifles were taken in the break, police said.

The possibility existed that when the establishment was closed for business Saturday, the thief may have been locked in the cellar. The cellar was not checked when it was locked.

The owner of a Lower Lisbon Street boarding house is the first to take advantage of free architectural services the city of Lewiston is offering to beautify the area.

After getting suggestions on how to make improvements in keeping with the historic nature of her building, Fernande Dionne will spend $1,800 to paint and repair the front of her building.

Mrs. Dionne is the first property owner to use services provided by architect Paul Gosselin of Salmon Falls Associates in South Berwick, according to city Community Development Director Stephan G. Myers.
