100 years ago, 1910

A Lewiston woman who some time ago bought out a second-hand store on Lincoln Street claims that the prior owner horsewhipped her Monday in an effort to drive her out of the store because she had been unable to continue payments. The case may come up in the Lewiston Municipal Court.

50 years ago, 1960

Lewiston Ward Three Alderman Ernest J. Malenfant told the city council last night that somebody is holding “canned heat” parties in a Bates Street parking lot and he asked that police patrol the area at night.

Malenfant said he has received complaints about canned heat parties being held in the lot where bus company owner Israel Winner has some of his old buses parked. The canned heat party-goers are getting into the buses, too, he said.

25 years ago 1985

It took a few years but Lewiston-Auburn finally has its own “Toughlove” support group for parents with problem teenagers.

Three attempts were made to start a group here and it looks like the third one will be successful. In the past, a few parents showed up at meetings for two to three weeks, but then attendance dropped to nothing.

This time the weekly meetings average about 35 parents, according to Liz Crockett, director of Mainely Families, a Portland-based organization that helps start “Toughlove” groups throughout Maine.
