Amanda McDonough wanted to organize the sort of event her cousin, Kelly Winslow-Dapolito, would have loved. Something involving motorcycles. Something that would have helped her daughter.
So McDonough pulled together Kelly’s Ride, a charity motorcycle ride to honor her late cousin and raise money for the teenager she left behind. It kicks off Saturday in Lewiston, travels to Naples and ends at Kelly’s Sabattus grave site.
“She had a motorcycle license and she had her own bike,” McDonough said. “I’m hoping for a big crowd, as much as the streets can handle.”
Winslow-Dapolito, 30, was killed in March. Her husband of six months, Patrick Dapolito, was charged with her murder. Police say he shot her in their Limington home and left her body in Upton.
Winslow-Dapolito had a 14-year-old daughter, Sabrina Beggs, with her high school sweetheart, McDonough said. The family wants to help Sabrina and her father, Torrie Beggs of Augusta, with expenses such as college and braces.
“It was a sudden death; Kelly didn’t have much,” McDonough said. “We’re looking to raise as much money as we possibly can.”
They hope the ride becomes an annual event, she said.
It will begin at 1 p.m. at Central Maine Power Sports in Lewiston, with registration at 12:30. Riders will stop in Naples for lunch, a route picked for the views, McDonough said, and arrive at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, where Kelly is buried next to her grandparents, at 5 p.m. Participation is $10 per bike.
State Rep. Stacy Dostie of Sabattus, Winslow-Dapolito’s aunt, said she would join the group at the cemetery.
“Kelly was a person who was full of life,” Dostie said. “She would take any opportunity like this to help people. She loved to help people.”
Winslow-Dapolito attended schools in Litchfield and Winthrop and had Sabrina, her only child, when she was 15.
“(Sabrina) puts on a good face,” McDonough said. “I lost my brother about four years ago; I know it’s hard — to lose a mother so suddenly. She’s doing really well. She has a lot of family support.”
They haven’t been able to locate Sabrina’s Social Security card, she said, a step needed to formally open a fund in her name. McDonough, of Lisbon, is acting as chief fundraiser until then.
She said she remembers her cousin as someone who always had a smile on her face.
“She had a big heart,” McDonough said. “We just have to keep our fingers crossed that justice will be served.”
Patrick Dapolito’s next court date is a bail hearing scheduled for Aug. 31, according to a clerk at the York County Superior Court.
