LEWISTON — Police officers are expected to take to the road Friday to honor one of their own who died in the line of duty 22 years ago to the day.
It’s the anniversary of the shooting death of officer David Payne, who was killed when he checked on a car that had gone off the road. A man recently released from prison pulled a .44 Magnum revolver and shot Payne.
Officers and a few other runners are scheduled to meet at the site of Payne’s slaying at 8 a.m. on outer River Road, where they’ll lay a cross for him. From there, they’ll run nearly 7 miles across the river into Auburn to Gracelawn Memorial Park, where Payne’s grave is. There, the runners plan to pause for a moment of silence and plant a flag displaying Payne’s officer badge.
The memorial run is the brainchild of officer Jason Johnson, who organized the event, Sgt. Marc Robitaille said. The run is expected to become an annual event, he said.
