GRAY – The Gray-New Gloucester girls won a nail-biter over Westbrook, 4-3, to claim the District 6 all-star softball championship Thursday.

G-NG took the early lead in the first when Alex Thompson smashed a double and then scored on a hit by Sam Libby.

The winners added three more runs in the second. Emily Hotham and Breanna Bozutto each singled. Hotham scored on a hit by Sandy Ricardi. Thompson hit another double to bring in two more runs and make it 4-0.

In the fourth, Westbrook put together several hits, two walks and two errors to score three runs. With the bases still loaded, Sam Libby struck out the final batter to stop the rally.

G-NG threatened in the sixth. Steph Greaton singled and moved to second on a walk by Hotham. With two runners on, the Westbrook pitcher struck out the next two batters to stop the rally.

Libby struck out the side in the seventh to secure the win.

Defensively, April Lambert made a great catch on a fly ball to left, Maria Valente threw out a runner trying to steal second, and Heather Chapman had four putouts at second base to complete the stellar team effort.

Special thanks goes out to Deana Kariotis and Linda Chase for all their work behind the scenes to get the girls ready for tournament play.

G-NG begins state tournament play in Westbrook on at 2 p.m. Sunday against the winner of the Saco/Biddeford-Bangor matchup.
