PARIS — A 20-year-old man pleaded not guilty Friday in Oxford County Superior Court to a charge that he damaged several businesses with firewood.

Robert L. Freitas III, of Carter Street in Norway, is charged with aggregated aggravated criminal mischief. According to state statute, the designation refers to collective determination of value in damaged property, which is over $2,000 in cases of aggravated criminal mischief.

Freitas is accused of destroying the windows of cars and stores in Norway, Oxford, Mechanic Falls, Poland, and Auburn in May of 2009 with pieces of firewood. In addition, the vandalism damaged vehicle bodies, a sign, and a mailbox. According to the indictment, the spree damaged two auto sales businesses, two markets, Responsible Pet Care in Norway, and property belonging to six individuals.

Freitas is free on personal recognizance bail. He is forbidden from having any contact with any of the individuals or businesses named in the case, and must also have no contact with an 18-year-old co-defendant who was a juvenile at the time of the crimes.
