JAY — Disposing of personal documents safely can be a challenge so a Jay financial advisory practice plans to offer a community event this Saturday that will make that task easier.
At the same time it will also help the Jay High School Envirothon team raise funds for its trip to Fresno, Calif., planned for Aug. 1 to 6, to attend the Canon International Envirothon Competition.
A Shredding Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 31, at the Maki & Moreau financial advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, located at 2 Skyline Drive.
Anyone can bring up to four boxes of personal documents such as cancelled checks, outdated bills, personal documents, letters, envelopes, medical information or outdated mortgage/loan information to the site, said Corey McDonald, an employee of the service.
A shredding service from Waterville named “Shredding on Site” will supply a truck that will shred documents quickly right in front of you, he said.
“With identity theft such a big thing, our purpose is to help people get rid of documents safely,” McDonald said.
In addition, financial advisors will be ready to answer questions about what items should be shredded. The service is offered at no charge and the shredded materials will be recycled.
“We wanted to start doing some community events,” he said. “This time all funds raised from refreshments will be donated to the Jay Envirothon team. Next time it will be something for the Livermore Falls community.”
The Jay team won the state Envirothon Competition this past spring entitling it to attend the international competition where it will compete with other states and Canadian provinces in environmental areas of soil and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry and wildlife, he said.
The team needs $8,400 for the six members to attend. They still need to raise $3,000 of that amount to cover the trip. The team will be present serving refreshments at the shredding event. Donations will be accepted for the hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn and beverages with all donations given to help the team, McDonald said.
The team consisting of five members plus an alternate won the regional Environthon competition hosted by local the local Soil and Water Conservation District. This entitled it to compete against two other high school teams in the state competition.
Shredding Day will be held rain or shine. For more information about the document shredding process or the Envirothon fundraiser, call 897-5869.
