100 years ago, 1910

As a special attraction at Tacoma Lakes during the first week in August, General Manager Harry B. Ivers of Lewiston has secured the famous diving horses King and Queen. These horses will give two exhibitions daily. It is said to be the most sensational act of its kind ever seen in Maine.

50 years ago, 1960

Two African governmental officials, who have been in Auburn this week, studying municipal operations, will leave the city today, apparently impressed.

William H. L. Lima, assistant secretary of finance for the Camaroon government, said yesterday that of the cities he has visited in the United States, Auburn is “one of the best run administratively.” Taye Afework, tax administrator of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, concurred with his associate’s views.

The two men are touring the United States, studying municipal and governmental operations, then correlating the data they gather for application to the needs of their own governments.

25 years ago 1985

NORWAY — It was an elephant race between print and radio news media Friday that opened the two days of the 32nd Annual Bean Hole Bean Festival. And Advertiser Democrat’s George Pulkkinen won with the speediest elephant.

The string of seven elephants, large and small, paraded with their trainers from the Oxford County Fairgrounds and the Ford Brothers Circus, up to Main Street and on to Cottage Street, while spectators watched from curbside and doorways.
