SOUTH PORTLAND — While its offense continued pummeling opposing pitchers into submission, Gayton gave its future foes at the state American Legion tournament something else to consider Thursday.
It can pitch a little bit, too.
Gayton reached double digits for the third consecutive game and Alex Wong tossed a four-hit complete game in a 13-2 triumph over Brewer that was called after seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule at the Wainwright Sports Complex.
Counting Saturday’s play-in game, Gayton (21-3) has scored 45 runs in three games. Its bats will be put to the test at 3:30 p.m. Friday when it faces two-time defending state champion Nova Seafood, the only other unbeaten team in the tournament.
“We’re just having a blast,” said Wong, who contributed to Gayton’s nine-hit attack with a two-run single. “Hitting is contagious. We get guys on by walks and hit-by-pitches, just being patient. It forces the other pitchers to throw strikes.”
Patience has indeed paid off for Gayton. After drawing 15 walks in Wednesday’s 22-13 bludgeoning of Fayette-Staples, it collected nine more free passes against Brewer (16-6).
Two of those walks came in a fortune-filled first inning in which Wong’s ground out was negated by a catcher’s interference, Jeff Keene was hit by a pitch and Greg LaBonte reached on an error by the shortstop.
Gayton went on to score four runs in the inning with two out against Brewer starter Pat McEwen. Two of those came home when Scott Ouellette’s pop fly behind second danced in the wind and hit off the glove of a sliding Brewer center fielder.
The wind wreaked havoc with outfielders all day, but it was an ally for Wong (7 IP, 1 ER, 6 Ks, 2 BB), who gave up an RBI double to Chase Daniels in the first and an unearned run in the third but was otherwise superb.
“I throw a two-seam (fastball) that normally has six inches (of break) on it, and today that wind was helping it out a lot,” Wong said. “We were working that fastball outside and got a lot of people off-balance. They were fouling it off or just looking at it for a strike.”
“He was outstanding,” Gayton coach Todd Cifelli said. “He executed his pitches, hit his locations against a very good lineup.”
Wong retired 10 of the final 12 Brewer hitters and allowed just one baserunner into scoring position after the third inning.
“(Wong) pitched a great game. I think he’s one of the best pitchers we’ve seen all year,” Brewer coach Chris Morris said. “He did a great job attacking hitter and pitched up in the count almost every batter.”
Gayton inflated its lead to 6-1 in the second on back-to-back doubles by Jeff Keene and Greg LaBonte, then broke the game open with three in the fifth on an RBI single by Trey Ouellette and Wong’s two-run hit. Corbin Hyde (RBI double), Alex Parker (RBI single) and Luke Cote (two-run single) closed out the scoring in the sixth.
Brewer faces Bessey Motors in a 1 p.m. elimination game Friday. Gayton’s opponent, Nova Seafood (19-3), has beaten Bessey and Bangor in the first two rounds.
“Until somebody beats them, the Maine State Legion tournament is the Nova Invitational,” Cifelli said. “We’ll have our hands full.”
Prior to the game, Gayton P/OF Mat Gordon received the American Legion Scholarship Award. Gordon is enrolling this fall at Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla. to play baseball.
