LIVERMORE FALLS — Selectmen voted unanimously Monday to spend up to $6,000 for safety railings at the Transfer Station.

The money was included in the budget last year but the work wasn’t, Town Manager James Chaousis II told the board.

The board approved pursuing the railing work at Howie’s Welding and Fabrication in Jay, using funds in this year’s budget.

The board also discussed items that should now be taken to the town’s transfer station instead of Jay, including computer monitors, televisions and demolition material.

Compactors have been installed and are ready to use at the Transfer Station, and the board discussed holding a ceremonial opening Aug. 14.

In other business, the board reviewed a communication from the Fiorica family who were vacationing in the area and noticed the Fiorica Road had been changed to Brookside Avenue.

The board decided to maintain the name change because there was 100 percent participation on a petition from residents on the road supporting the name change.

They also agreed to offer the original sign, now in storage, to the family.

Jim Fiorica wrote to the town asking for the selectmen to reconsider the name change. His father, Gaetano Fiorica, a beloved physician and one who bought and renovated more than 25 properties in the area, was instrumental in the creation of a nursing home in the town of Livermore Falls, he wrote. The Pomeroy Hill Nursing Home opened in 1978 on Fiorica Road.

The family visits the road each summer when they return to their camp at Round Pond, he said.

The board also appointed John Ross to the Planning Board for a term expiring June 30, 2013 leaving one position still open on the board. The empty position expires June of 2011.

Appointed to the Budget Committee were Megan Jackman until June 2011 and Fran Szostek until June 2012. On position on the budget committee also remains open for a term expiring in June 2013.
