Hand Sewing: Saturday, Aug 7, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., $45. Through sewing a small pouch, participants will learn about needle, fabric and thread choice, knots for beginning and ending, hemming, patching and how to add or replace buttons, zippers and drawstrings. Attendees will go home with a pouch and a starter sewing kit.

Koviashuvik Day: Saturday, Aug. 14, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with tours at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., free. Tours will include a stone root cellar, earth-bermed greenhouse, rainwater collection systems, log cabin, solar and wood stove hot water systems, alternative cooking technologies, vegetable gardens and fruit and nut plantings. Throughout the day there will be ongoing food preservation demonstrations.

Fermentation Day: Sunday, Aug. 15, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., $40. The old-world food storage method of lacto-fermentation is simple and does not involve vinegar, canning or refrigeration. The morning will be spent on sauerkraut and after lunch, pickles and dilly beans. Participants can stay for all three or choose to come for just sauerkraut in the morning and pickles in the afternoon, for $25. Lunch will be provided.

Moccasin Making: Saturday, Aug. 28, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., $75. Participants will return home with a new pair of homemade moccasins from hand-tanned leather.

Founded in Temple in 2008, Koviashuvik is a small school that teaches practical and inexpensive ways for people to live with and use their local land.
