Ruth Delahanty smiles at her husband, Thomas E. Delahanty II, after the former Androscoggin County Superior Court justice was sworn in as the 36th U.S. attorney for the District of Maine in Portland on Friday. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the U.S. District Court. Delahanty, who sat on the bench for 27 years, hails from an extended family of lawyers and prominent judges from the Twin Cities area. He served briefly as U.S. attorney 30 years ago. He said he returns to the job hoping to accomplish more than he was able to during his previous abbreviated term. The office and parameters of the job have changed, he said, but not its core mission of doing what’s right while being fair and just. Delahanty said he regretted that his father, also a judge, couldn’t be at the ceremony. “If he could be here for one more day, I wish it could be today,” he said.
