JAY — Following the resignation of Jay School Committee member Marga Hutchinson, the committee agreed Thursday to seek applicants for her position and hold interviews on Sept. 2 to elect a new member.

Hutchinson, whose term expires in June of 2011, submitted a letter of resignation noting personal reasons, including a busy schedule, for her withdrawal from the committee effective immediately, said Superintendent Robert E. Wall.

According to school policies, replacement of a member can either be undertaken by a town election or a vote of the school committee within 30 days. The committee will choose a successor to finish Hutchinson’s term at which time the town will vote for a candidate to fill the position, he said.  The committee is made up of five members.

According to the school website, www.jayschools.org, a school committee member must be a resident of Maine, a qualified voter in the municipality and be at least 18 years old.

The position is listed on the website under employment and anyone interested can submit an application by mail to the Robert E. Wall, superintendent, 31 Community Drive, Jay, ME 04239, or contact the school’s central office for more information. The position will be advertised and information is available at the town office, he said.

In other business, the committee heard some preparations for the start of the new school year on Sept. 1 and approved superintendent nominations for several positions within the district.

New parent-student handbooks are being prepared for the high school and elementary schools and will be ready for the start of school, explained high school Principal Gilbert Eaton, and elementary Principal Chris Hollingsworth.

Within the upcoming week, Eaton expected student schedules to be completed. Several students want to take courses at Foster Tech Center in Farmington and still take college level classes at Jay, he said.

The Committee also approved school lunch prices. For the third or fourth year in a row, there will be no price increase for meals, Wall told the board.

Appointments approved within the district for the upcoming school year include: Mike Methvin, Jay Middle School athletic director; Robert Taylor, Jay High School Envirothon coach; Susan Knowles, high school yearbook advisor; Annette Girardin, high school math team advisor; Dan Lemieux, high school student council advisor; Maurie Stockford, high school library educational technician II/PLATO coordinator; Stephanie Merrill, high school special services part-time educational technician; Jessica Bessey, middle school varsity field hockey coach; Robert Taylor, middle school Lego League advisor; Teresa Schmidt, middle school student council advisor; Susan Sandler, middle school yearbook advisor; Christopher Hollingsworth, Jay School Department Affirmative Action officer and Chris Bessey, Jay High School fall contest manager.
