100 years ago, 1910

The Mt. David Shakespeare Club met Saturday at the home of E. H. White on Main Street for a social and picnic dinner, with a short business meeting in the afternoon. It was decided to study astronomy the coming year, the first meeting of the season being Friday, Sept. 30. The president, Miss Frances Garcelon, will, if possible, represent this club at the meeting of the State Federation at Skowhegan this week.

50 years ago, 1960

Auburn and Lewiston police and the Auburn Fire Department converged on the Androscoggin County jail late Saturday afternoon in response to telephone calls for a riot there.

They were met by bewildered deputies. There were no riots and as far as was known everything was in order at the jail.

An investigation has been launched to determine responsibility for the telephone calls. A man placed all three calls and gave the name of Deputy Ernest Giguere of the sheriff’s department.

25 years ago 1985

LISBON — The Planning Board has granted Miller Hydro Power a conditional-use permit for its plans to construct a hydroelectric facility in Lisbon Falls.

This is the only local permit necessary, a Planning Board spokesman said. The firm has already obtained most of the federal and state permits for the project.
