CARTHAGE — New England Celtic Arts will host the acclaimed Scottish borders region band Cantrip Sunday, Sept. 19, at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center.

The trio of Scottish traditional musicians is known for its driving blend of fiddles, bagpipes and guitar. The name is an Old Scots word meaning a charm, magic spell or piece of mischief — an apt description of the unexpected twists and turns in the band’s musical arrangements.

While firmly rooted in the Scottish tradition, Cantrip’s sound branches out into and is influenced by music from the Scandinavian, Balkan, Basque, Breton and Quebecois traditions.

Band members are Dan Houghton, who plays whistles, viola, hammered dulcimer, the pipes and flute; Brendan Taaffe, a prominent guitarist, fiddler and singer in New England’s thriving contra dance and Irish music community; and Jon Bews, a violinist who has earned a reputation as a dance fiddler playing for Scottish country dance classes and balls all over Europe.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. There will be a jam session at 6 p.m., when audience members are encouraged to bring musical instruments and play for a few minutes with the performers.

Tickets are $10 at the door. Call 562-4445. Skye Theater is at 2 Highland Drive.
