DEDHAM, Maine (AP) — The Coast Guard says a sailor killed along with his family in a collision in the Down East town of Dedham assisted in 12 search and rescue cases off the coast of Maine.

Petty Officer Carlos Tapia was on his first Coast Guard duty station assignment in Jonesport, where he served as an engineer.

Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Nick Barrow says Tapia, a native of Lima, Peru, spent about 600 hours at sea during nearly three years in Jonesport.

Officials say Tapia was killed late Tuesday afternoon along with his wife, 23-year-old Rachelle Tapia, and Rachelle Tapia’s 4-year-old daughter, Mackenzie Gray.

Investigators say it appears that Carlos Tapia’s car crossed into the path of an oncoming vehicle on Route 1A. The driver of the other vehicle survived.
